Web developer in Austin: a fast marketing site your team can edit

I'd be your web developer in Austin for the marketing site, not the product. Software companies get a site that sits beside the product and loads fast on a phone. Someone technical on your side will read the code, so I keep it plain enough to follow. Its domain, hosting and code stay in your company's name from the first commit.

Overview

Written for the engineer in the room

Your founder may have shipped software. Your CTO may sit in on the call. Either way, someone will open the site's code and look at how it was put together.

I write it with that person in mind. Components are named for what they do. The steps to run and deploy it are written down in the repository, so nobody has to ask me.

I'd keep the marketing site in its own repository, away from the product's code. That way a broken build on one side never holds up the other.

Four things settled in writing before launch

Each of these gets a written answer you can keep and show to anyone who asks later.

  • 01

    Speed

kept light, so the marketing site doesn't lag behind the product it sells, checked on a mid-range phone.
  • 02

    Structure

one route per page and headings in order, so search engines and assistive software can follow it.
  • 03

    Editing

copy and new pages changed by marketing, with no deploy from engineering.
  • 04

    Ownership

every login sits with your company, and nothing is held back on my side.

Who should join the call?

A call comes first. Invite whoever signs off the site, technical or not.

What a scope from me looks like

The sample scope for a startup marketing site

Every line here is agreed in writing first. You read it, change it and sign it off before design begins.

An example first scope — a software company's marketing site
v1
FIXED PRICE · PER PHASE

Included

  • A written scope: every page and feature as its own line, agreed before work starts
  • Design to build, reviewed on a staging URL that stays open the whole project
  • Mobile first — checked on a real phone
  • Domain, hosting and every account created in your name from day one
  • A marketing site in its own repository, separate from the product's code
  • A README in the repository with the steps to run and deploy the site
  • Basic on-page SEO: titles, descriptions, headings, sitemap, Search Console connected
  • A runbook at handover: how to edit it, what renews and when

Phase two

  • A blog or resources section with its own editors
  • Sign-up or waitlist forms wired into the product
  • Ongoing SEO once the site has traffic to read
  • A maintenance plan once the site is live
  • Logo and brand design, quoted separately from the build
Kept on paper until you decide each one is worth building.

Not doing

  • Guaranteed rankings
Google sets the order of results. My team builds each page fast, clear and easy for it to read.

What moves the number

Scope drivers for a startup site

Each of these adds work, and each one is agreed before it is built.

  • 01How many product features need their own pageeach one is written and designed separately
  • 02Sign-up, waitlist or login links into the productanything touching the product is tested with your engineers
  • 03Traffic the current site already hasredirects keep it when the pages move
  • 04A blog or resources section at launchit needs its own templates and editor roles

Where this comes from

Is there a US record behind this?

There is: 600+ projects for US clients. The projects page shows the ones whose clients agreed to be named, and their reviews are there in their own words.

Across every country, the total is 900+ projects since 2017, and I've led each one of them.

FAQ

Questions about the build itself

Nothing here touches the product itself.

How does a client know what the build covers?

A startup site's build covers what's on the written scope and nothing else. Each page and feature is its own line. Anything new that comes up halfway gets added to the scope as its own line first, and only then built.

Can the marketing team edit pages after launch?

Marketing can change the copy and add whole pages after launch without touching code. I hand over a written guide with the steps, and nothing routine goes through engineering.

Which stack suits a startup marketing site?

Next.js is my usual pick for a startup marketing site, because it's fast and it's built on React. WordPress is the other option when marketing wants an editor they've used before. I'll recommend one on the call and explain why.

Why hire an offshore web developer in Kolkata, India?

Nothing about the build depends on being in the same city. Every page goes up on a staging link you can open from Austin, and every account is set up for your company rather than for me. The team works on your schedule, in your time zone.

What about Austin businesses that aren't software companies?

Service businesses in Austin get a different site from a software company. A contractor or a clinic is competing for the same searches as plenty of businesses that arrived as the city grew. So the site is smaller, and it's built around what a customer types and what they want to see before they ring.

Can the site match the product's design?

The marketing site can use your product's colours, type and components if your designers share them. I reuse what they've already made instead of inventing a second look, because a visitor moving from the site into the product should recognise the same company.

Next step

What does the product do?

Tell me what the product does and who buys it. Send the link to your current site too, if there's one. I'll have read both before we speak.
