AI website builder vs a developer: which one for your business?

My team builds WordPress and Next.js sites, and AI models write our first drafts. I don't sell a builder. For some sites I would still tell you to use one.

Overview

How I'd answer it on a call

With an AI website builder vs a developer, the real difference is how much of the writing lands on you. If you're happy to write the prompt and edit every sentence yourself, a builder will put the site online, and I will say so on the call. If you'd rather send your material and have my team turn it into pages, that's a developer build.

Both sides use AI. A builder's model produces the whole site from one prompt. My team uses models to draft from the services, photos and reviews you send, and then a developer reads each page against those notes. The AI website development service runs that way.

AI website builder vs a developer: eight things to weigh

Hosting, moving the site and who checks the words are where the two differ most. Editing it yourself is close to even.

✓ suits it · ✗ harder · ~ depends on your site. My scoring, and I'm paid only for the developer side.
CRITERIONAI website builderDeveloper (AI in the drafting)
The first version✓The quicker of the two: a full draft from one prompt~Slower, because the pages are tested before you see them
Where the words come from~Generated from your prompt, then checked by you✓Drafted from your notes, then edited by my team
Design~Starts from the builder's templates✓Starts from your brand, a reference site or your Figma file
Hosting✓Included in the builder's plan~A host you choose, billed separately
Moving it later✗The pages stay on the builder's platform if you leave✓The files and the hosting account are yours to move
Editing it yourself✓In the builder's own editor✓In WordPress or the site's editor, with a runbook to follow
Paying for it✓A monthly subscription~A scoped build, then hosting
When something breaks✓The builder's support team, through your plan✓The team that built it, through a care plan or a quoted fix

Why it matters

Where I'd keep a builder, and what to check if you do

Plenty of sites start well on a builder. A practice that has just opened and needs its address online. An idea you want to test before spending on it. A page for one event. For pages like these I'll tell you to keep the builder and spend the money on the business instead.

On a build, my team also does the work behind the pages. The contact form is tested until it reaches your inbox. A checkout is tried on a phone. Each thing you sell gets its own page, written in the words people type into Google, with redirects, the sitemap and structured data set up underneath.

If you pick a builder, read every generated sentence before it goes live. A model can describe a service you've never offered, in a confident voice, because it can't know your prices or your story. Start with the contact details and the list of services, since those are the lines a visitor acts on.

What the research says

What makes visitors trust a site, or leave a checkout

People judge a site partly by how it looks, and shoppers give their own reasons for leaving a checkout. These are the published figures.

70.22% of online shopping carts are abandoned (average of 50 studies); these are the top reasons shoppers give.

  • Extra costs too high (shipping, tax, fees)40%
  • Delivery was too slow20%
  • I didn't trust the site with my credit card information19%
  • The site wanted me to create an account18%
  • Too long / complicated checkout process17%

Your text and photos, in a folder of your own

Save every text and photo you hand to a builder or a developer in a folder you control. If you move from a builder to a build later, my team starts from that folder.

Case study

Dr Adrienne Little's WordPress site

Dr Adrienne Little wrote in her review: "It was a dream of mine to have a professionally designed site, but I thought it would be too costly." She came with a sample site she knew converted, and I built her own version on WordPress. Her review also mentions seeing the site "as it was being built and corrected", on a staging link. At the end I showed her how to maintain it herself.

Well Care Innovators is another WordPress build made from the client's own material, and they wrote that they were "very excited to share my website with the world". You can see more WordPress builds on the projects page.

Pricing

How the money works on each side

A builder is a subscription. You pay every month the site is on it, and the fee includes the hosting.

A build is a one-off cost, written up as a scope before any work starts. You pay a host of your choice directly, and that account is in your name. With AI in the drafting, the drafting work gets smaller and the checking stays as it was. The pricing page sets out what decides the figure for a build.

Show me what you have now

Send the link to your current page, or your notes for the one you want. On the call we'll look at whether that material is enough to build pages from, and what you'd still need to gather.

FAQ

Questions people ask before hiring me

Ask something else

Should I use an AI website builder?

Yes, if one monthly bill suits you better than a one-off build. The builder's plan covers the hosting too, so you manage one account instead of a host and a site, and you edit the pages in the builder's own editor.

Isn't a web developer just using AI too?

Yes, my team uses AI models to draft pages, code and copy from the material you send. After the draft, a developer reads each page and checks every claim against your notes. Then the pages are tested on real phones and with JavaScript switched off.

Is there an option where I own the whole site?

A WordPress or Next.js build is yours outright. The files, the hosting account and the domain are in your name, and you get a written guide to editing the site. If you stop working with my team, the site goes with you.

Can a site made with an AI builder show up on Google?

A builder page can rank when it answers what people search for, in their words, about your business in particular. On a builder, that copy has to come from you. On a build, my team writes the pages around those searches and adds structured data behind them.

What carries across if I leave a builder for a build?

Your text and photos carry across, and each old page address is redirected to its new one. The pages themselves are rebuilt on WordPress or Next.js, because a builder's layouts run only on its own platform.

Can visitors tell a site was AI-generated?

Not from the tool itself. What visitors notice is whether the photos and the words are about your business. A model can't take a picture of your shop, your team or your work. On a build, my team works from the photos you send, so the pages show your own work and your own team.
